AP English Literature & Composition

A demanding college level English class for those students with outstanding English skills.
Major authors, periods, genres, and themes from the 16th - 20th centuries will be studied with careful attention to both textual detail and historical context. Intensive critical reading and analytical writing will be done in preparation for the Advanced Placement English Literature and Composition test. (Concurrent enrollment in Early Graduation English is not allowed.)

WHO SHOULD TAKE THIS COURSE?
Students with an affinity towards reading text with literary merit. Texts with literary merit tend to be adult, complex, and long. Students should also enjoy writing academically or at
least express a desire to improve their academic writing skills. These students tend to be college bound individuals, but it is not limited to such types of students.

WHAT KNOWLEDGE WILL BE GAINED?
Students will gain a deeper more profound understanding of the methods authors and poets use to illuminate the meaning of the work as a whole. Their abilities to analyze the author’s purpose and message will also increase. Students will improve their own style of writing through the study of diction and syntax. Students will also simply read good books.
